Community Service with USS CHAFEE crew

On 16 October, 2003, the NCBC Sea Cadets joined with the ship's company from the soon-to-be-commissioned USS CHAFEE in performing community service in the area. The ship supplied 64 able hands to engage in a time-honored Naval activity - chipping, sanding, scraping and painting the exterior of the North Kingstown Senior Center, locally known as the Beechwood House. NCBC Sea Cadet staff provided logistical support in coordinating the efforts of the ship with the community, and the town of North Kingstown supplied paint, scrapers, ladders, brushes and staging - thanks to the quick efforts of Councilman Anthony Miccolis, Jr., Town Manager Rich Kerbel, and Public Works Director Phil Bergeron, who were able to support the crew from CHAFEE with all their needs in what turned out to be an incredibly short window of opportunity. The amount of preservation work that took place in one afternoon was nothing short of amazing - the entire east face of the Beechwood House was refinished and repainted from ground level to most of the second story. Quite an effort, topped off with a presentation of signed portraits of the ship and the ship's flag to the Senior Center (flying proudly in the photos shown here).
