Advanced Sail Training, Narragansett Bay

For two glorious weeks in August, Sea Cadets from a dozen states came to Rhode Island to participate in a fast-paced program of advanced sailing instruction. Cadets turned to on a variety of sailing and motor vessels, all receiving hands-on instruction on the very physical and complex nature of large, deepwater sail craft. While all the Cadets received a solid education in the myriad systems of large sailing vessels and the dynamics of their movements in the marine environment, the larger purpose of their training was in learning to come together as a unified crew. By their very nature, large sailing vessels require many hands to keep the lines, sheets, masts and spars all choreographed in perfect order. Since Sea Cadets, by definition, are all leaders in training, it became a very interesting exercise to whip a boat full of leaders into a cooperative and interactive crew. Learning when to take charge, and when to acknowledge leadership in others - this was a new experience for many.
