Visit to 143rd Airlift Wing, Rhode Island Air National Guard, 24 February, 2005

Click on image to view at full size NCBC Battalion Sea Cadets hosted their shipmates from FALCON Division in Providence and NETC Division in Newport, during a joint exercise as the guests of the Rhode Island Air National Guard (RIANG) at Quonset Point. More than 40 Cadets hit the ground running as they passed through the main gate of the 143rd Airlift Wing, and immediately set to with tours of the facilities at the base, range training using the 143rd's threat simulator, and orientation aboard the latest model of the RIANG C130-J Hercules II transport aircraft (which itself had recently returned from operations in Iraq). After a very full morning of activity the Cadets had worked up a powerful appetite and were rewarded with a hearty lunch of fried chicken and pizza. Then came the main event of the day, a flight aboard the C130-J. No mere up and down orientation flight, the aircraft hauled out the Cadets with an aggressive ascent over the Ocean State and Narragansett Bay. The Cadets first flew south and west along the New England coast, returned following Long Island Sound, then a jump across Block Island Sound and over to Cape Cod and the Islands. The return route hooked back east, taking us over Buzzards Bay, across Aquidneck Island and the city of Newport, and ended with a rapid descent and landing at the airport at Quonset Point. During the flight, the Cadets were turned loose in the cargo bay (under the watchful eye of the Loadmaster) and all got the chance for seat time in the cockpit of the C130-J. After our return and outbrief by the 143rd staff, Cadets headed off to home and dinner, armed with many stories to tell.

The Sea Cadets were very appreciative of this opportunity offered by the leadership team, staff, and personnel of the 143rd Airlift Wing and the Rhode Island Air National Guard - their efforts made a powerful impression on the Cadets.
