Remedaling Ceremony
| The 101st Airborne Division Association asked the Sea Cadets of NCBC Battalion if they could provide their Color Guard to render honors in a unique event - a Remedaling Ceremony to honor a well-known local personality and Vietnam veteran. Joseph B. Machado, Jr earned many medals and ribbons during his tour with the 101st in Vietnam - a duty he volunteered for, as opposed to being drafted. Among that collection were two Purple Hearts - the second coming after near-fatal injuries that had him in federal hospitals for half a decade upon his return home. As was common with many returning veterans, personal tragedy and great personal difficulties accompanied his return to Rhode Island, and this resulted in Joe's loss of his wartime decorations. This enormous sacrifice and high price that was paid by Joe Machado needed to be reconciled, and through the perseverance and diligence of Harry Jacobs, the President of the southeast New England Region of the 101st Airborne Division Association, this was made right in a ceremony at the U.S. Army Recruiting Station in Warwick, RI. The presence of Congressman Jim Langevin, Rhode Island Second Congressional District; and David Foehr, aide to Senator Jack Reed, was an extraordinary gesture and spoke volumes of the significance and dignity of this event.
