On 23 January 2004, NCBC Sea Cadets hosted a visit by Chief Radioman George Wardwell, USN (ret). RMC Wardwell serves as the general secretary of the Newport County Council of the U.S. Navy League, and also serves as the council's liason to Sea Cadet units in Rhode Island. There was a special purpose for the visit - the presentation of a check for $500 from the council in appreciation of the efforts by NCBC staff and Cadets during a recent visit by the destroyer USS CHAFEE. The CHAFEE was in port for its commissioning ceremony, which took place at Naval Station Newport on 18 October, 2003. Sea Cadets from NCBC Battalion, along with their shipmates from NETC Division in Newport and FALCON Division in Providence, provided invaluable service during the event - photos of which can be seen by selecting this link. NCBC Cadets also assisted ship's force in restoration work at the North Kingstown Senior Center, a community service project that drew great attention in the local area (photos and story - select this link). The check was gratefully accepted and was promptly used to pay for uniforms, ribbons, patches and nametags.
