Community Service - Fishing Derby Support, Little Ninigret Pond, RI
On 10 June, 2006 the NCBC Battalion Sea Cadets returned to Little Ninigret Pond in Charlestown, RI for another season of Community Service to the town. The Cadets provided much needed assistance to the staff and volunteers of the Town of South Kingstown, Parks and Recreation Department for the town's annual Fishing Derby. The Cadets had several tasks to perform - to assist the young folks, ranging in age from 3 to 10, in baiting their hooks and casting their lines; untangling lines from nearby trees and brush; provide help in bringing the fish in to be weighed and measured; recording names, weights and sizes of both fish and fisher-children, and keeping an orderly flow of children and fish flowing from pond to scale and back again. The Cadets were everwhere around the shoreline of Little Ninigret pond, which was lined with over fifty young fisherfolk and their families, all eager to land the best catch of the day. Prizes were awarded to youngsters with the biggest fish, the most fish, the strangest fish, and other singular events.
