It was a rainy Sunday morning when NCBC Sea Cadets boarded the NCBC Support Vehicle and headed out to Newport Naval Station. Upon arrival they were joined by Cadets and staff from FALCON Division and FREEDOM Division, and the entire cohort headed over to pier 2 to pay a visit to a new arrival at the dock - the soon-to-be-commissioned USS WAYNE E. MEYER (DDG 108), the Navy's newest Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer. The Cadets familiarized themselves with proper Navy protocol for boarding and disembarking from a warship, assisted by the crew of the MEYER that were staffing the Quarterdeck. The Cadet contingent was large enough to be separated into two groups, and they toured several of the interior spaces, crew quarters, galley, the hanger deck (used for the two LAMPS SH-60B helicopters assigned to the vessel), and completed their tour with a visit to the bridge. The rain did nothing to damper their enthusiasm, and the crew members leading the two groups did an excellent job in briefing the Cadets on the layout of the ship and the purpose of the various spaces on board.
Our gratitude to the command staff of Newport Naval Station for their assistance in making this short-fused event possible. For the images below, click on any photo to see a larger view. It will open in a new window (unless you have popups disabled) - no need to reload this page.
