US Naval Sea Cadet Corps, Quonset Point, RI

Commissioning Ceremony, USS CHAFEE

On 18 October, 2003, the NCBC Sea Cadets joined with their shipmates from FALCON Division (Providence, RI) and NETC Division (Newport, RI) in participating in one of the most traditional naval ceremonies - the commissioning of a new warship. The ship, USS CHAFEE (DDG 90), is the fortieth destroyer of the Arleigh Burke class and the twenty-second to be built in New England, by Bath Iron Works in Maine. CHAFEE is named after the late Senator John Hubbard Chafee of Providence, R.I., (1922-1999), a Rhode Islander who distinguished himself as a U.S. senator, Secretary of the Navy, Rhode Island governor, and war hero - a Marine veteran of Guadalcanal with service as both an enlisted man and commissioned officer. The Cadets from all three Sea Cadet units in the Ocean State worked the commissioning ceremony from not long after sunrise to late in the afternoon, and all three units distinguished themselves with their hard work and excellent military bearing.
