Funeral for LCpl Bart Carroll
On 10 July 2002, a funeral was held for LCpl Barton J. Carroll, USMC, who had been brutally murdered on the Fourth of July as he was returning home from his duty station at Camp Lejeune, NC. In addition to being a Marine, Bart Carroll was a Sea Cadet, having graduated from the program the previous year. PO3 Carroll had been a member of the Newport Sea Cadet unit for five years, and this senseless tragedy was deeply felt by his fellow cadets in the Newport unit - Bart had been their mentor, their leader, and their friend. The cadet corps from NCBC dispatched a contingent to the funeral to stand with their shipmates from Newport during the Mass of Christian Burial and the subsequent internment ceremony.
