US Naval Sea Cadet Corps, Quonset Point, RI

Joshua Booth Memorial, Sturbridge, MA

On 2 December, 2006, nearly 100 Sea Cadets and their adult leaders from four units in southeast New England (Worcester, Fall River, Providence, and Quonset Point) joined with family, friends, and fellow patriots in honoring the memory of 1st LT Joshua Booth, USMC, who had been killed in Iraq several weeks before. Nearly 1000 people filled the field house of Tantasqua Regional High School in Sturbridge, all to witness and participate in a memorial ceremony that was both remarkable in scope and deeply moving for everyone in attendance. Cadets assisted with ushering and seating of the audience, participated in a procession of flags, and the regional directors for Sea Cadet Regions 1-2 and 1-4 presented a flag to the parents of Booth. Joshua Booth had been a Sea Cadet with the Worcester Division, graduating from the program in 2001 and then completing his education at The Citadel in Charleston, SC. CWO-2 Scott LaPlante, a retired Master Chief in the U.S. Navy Reserve and the commanding officer of the Sea Cadets in Worcester, gave an eloquent speech during the ceremony where he related his experiences with and memories of Joshua Booth during his time as a Sea Cadet. More on the ceremony and the support given by the town of Sturbridge can be found here [select this link].
